How Often Should You Really Water Your Houseplants?

The Watering Dilemma
“Once a week” is a myth. The watering needs of a plant change based on the season, the humidity, the pot size, and the type of plant. Relying on a strict schedule is a recipe for root rot.
The Finger Test
The best tool you have is your finger. Push it about two inches into the soil. If it feels moist, wait. If it’s dry, it’s time to water. This works perfectly for tropicals like the Monstera Deliciosa.
Weight and Leaves
Lift the pot. A dry plant is surprisingly light! Also, look at the leaves. A Peace Lily will dramatically droop when it needs water, but will perk right back up an hour after a good soak.
When in doubt, it’s almost always better to underwater than to overwater. Explore our Indoor Collection for plants with varying water needs.
